Christmas came early

Christmas came early
Winter season is just around the corner and we want to let our users know to be careful out there! Thanks to 91b18a1da, we get to show everyone a prime example of what not to do in inclement weather. We could also give the benefit of the doubt and think that the driver thought it was grass, but either way it looks like Christmas came early for somebody. :)

mmmm Rice!

Cheers to theplumberdude for having too much time on your hands and of course for building this fantastic rice-a-roni setup! What better way is there to hear your Honda VTEC system then just under your hood? Install a extra long intake tube that stretches out to your passenger side window! Listen as you hear the beastly suction of Rice!

Speaking of Rice, have you ever seen steamed rice before?

Poor Guy! :(

Poor Guy
Accidents in F1 Motorsports are not a joke and most of the times they get very ugly. It's unusual to see such a funny incident occur such as this one. People would fall head over heals just to be part of an F1 team, and coincidently this is exactly what happens to a pit crew member.

Thanks SLoBRo

Turbo Cart vs. F360 Modena

Turbo Cart vs. F360 Modena
Thanks to CAR-MOVIES.de for this interesting match-up.

In the left corner we have the Ferrari 360 Modena. This beautiful red beast makes 400 horsepower but weighs over 3,000 lbs.

In the right corner we have a Turbo FormulaCart. This bare bones red beast makes 100 horsepower but weighs only 220 lbs.

In a sprint off the line, who's gonna win the race? It's a slap in the face for Tiffosi everywhere as the turbo cart smokes the Ferrari

Nervous Dad's Reaction to 630hp M3

Nervous Dad's Reaction to 630hp M3
If you don't enjoy listening to people swear you might wanna skip this upload from Roma007

You've got a new car and you're so proud of it, all you want to do is take your Dad for a ride and show him a) what it'll do and b) how good you are behind the wheel.

From the sounds of things, though, Dad's love of cars does not translate to a love of speed, which is exactly what this new E46 BMW M3 (making 630hp) is all about!

We're guessing 'Robert' didn't tell his Pops quite how much hp the car has or that it's got a Methanol injection, but his Dad figures it out pretty quickly...and the mix of nervous laughter and expletives begin!

No E-Brake = Near Disaster

No E-Brake = Near Disaster
Roma007 does his bit for public safety and BMW drivers!

There's a little thing in a car called an E-Brake. It's not just there for show, it's actually rather useful. Simply shoving a manual car into gear is not how you're supposed to keep it stationary when parked, as this near disaster illustrates.

It's a good job the car's owner is fit and we're impressed by his ability to get in and stop the car before the large semi-truck nearly takes its hood off. We're also guessing the driver won't forget the E-Brake again any time soon.

Click here for a compilation of near misses, including some really stupid people who sort of deserve to get hit.

Team Tricycle Drift

Team Tricycle Drift
Massive shout out to Flavien for this fantastically-entertaining vid!

So you don't have your license yet, or maybe you just don't have a car yet, and you really want to try your hand at drifting. What better way to try than with 3-wheels, pedal power and a steep grade, plus some gnarly switchbacks?

These guys rock! Keep watching as one of them goes off and a couple have near-misses with trees as Team Tricycle Drift make their (fast) way down the hill.

We're pretty sure Johnny Law would have a problem with them doing that and we know he'd definitely have a problem with this street drifting in Japan!

18-Wheeler vs. Inertia = Crash

18-Wheeler vs. Inertia = Crash
Grazie to Roma007 for another 'great' upload, if that's the right word.

So, you're driving along the 2-lane highway, minding your own business and, as luck would have it, videoing the road ahead when a large semi passes you at speed. And it's coming up to a turn. And, well, inertia being the bitch it is, the truck just doesn't maneuver that turn so well.

Watch as the 18-wheelers flips in the turn and be glad there wasn't anyone next to him in the slow lane.

Turns out flipping a Jeep isn't so much fun either!

Vespa Turbo!

Vespa Turbo
micarone brings us proof that you really can dyno anything, especially if it's turbocharged!

We're not convinced we'd like to take a ride on the Vespa Turbo - those tires a too damn skinny! - but kudos to the dude who is. The 2-wheeler is putting out an impressive 42 horsepower and enough noise to rival even the loudest and most powerful leaf blower.

What do you think about a race between the Vespa and this insanely fast moped?

575hp Cadillac STS-V

575hp Cadillac STS-V
D3Cadillac has been having way too much of a good time out at a deserted airfield.

Well, what better place to test the ridiculously powerful 575hp Cadillac STS-V?

Wait for the extremely fast pass - without music - to hear the amazing noise being produced by the engine and exiting through the dual pipes. If we didn't know better, we'd think there was actually a plane on that runway.

Now we just need to see a head-to-head between that car and this one!

Chevy SS...Something, Spied!
KingKnight brings us spy pics of a new Chevy SS...something. We'd love to tell you the car's name but we can't.

With the advent of so many camera phones, it's hard for car manufacturers to keep much secret. However, this SS-Badged Chevy has tape over the name to keep everybody guessing.

Rumor has it that the car is destined for the Middle East or Brazil and will be powered by the same LS3 that's in the G8 GT.

SS power is nothing to laugh at as this 1000hp Chevy Impala SS shows.

National Auto Sport Association

NASA Nationals

There's no shortage of track days, rallies or organized driving events around the country, though some are better organized than others!

If you take your driving seriously, whether you're an aspiring or already-accomplished racer, you might want to check out NASA. No, not that one, but instead the National Auto Sport Association, that's been around since '91 and let's you go crazy (i.e.: race under controlled conditions) at some of the biggest race venues across the country.

StreetFire was recently invited to Mid-Ohio for the 3rd NASA Nationals.

"The 3rd NASA Championships will allow competitors from all over the country to battle for the most coveted National Champion title in their respective classes at one of the most demanding and prestigious road courses in the country."

You don't have to be Dale Earnhardt Jr., Michael Schumacher or Sebastien Loeb to compete and there are various classes, levels and disciplines. High Performance Driving Events (HPDE), Rally Sport, including Rally-X and Rally Sprint, Time Trial, NASA-X and Competition Racing programs offer something for everyone and what better way to spend the day than at speed, going wheel-to-wheel or flying round a blind curve on a mountain road?

Honda NSX Spied In Testing!
Big shout out to soujiroseta for this fantastic spy footage.

There's a new car been spied in testing and it's damn quick! It might not look anything like its predecessor but this, ladies and gents, is the all-new Honda NSX that Honda's CEO and president, Takeo Fukui, is on record as saying will be powered by a V10.

Whatever's under that hood, it's certainly not lacking in power and is making all the right noises, too. Don't know about you, but we can't wait for the NSX vs. GT-R match up!

How Not To Right A Tipped Semi

How Not To Right A Tipped Semi
More acts of stupidity courtesy of TheDarkKnight , although this one is a bit surprising given the local firefighters are on hand, so you'd think things would go a bit more smoothly.

But, alas, no. Brute force, even if it's done gently, just doesn't appear to be the correct way to right a tipped semi. Apparently all that careful preparation is no match for a 10-ton truck. Er, can we say e-brake, anyone?

Better yet, they should have called the Wrecked guys! They always know how to right a wrong.

NHRA Museum

NHRA Museum
BestofStreetFire loves to entertain you but also to educate you.

Used to be that sex was safe and racing was dangerous, as opposed to today when drivers walk away from the most horrific crashes and you shouldn't believe anyone when they say, "oh, you don't need to wear one of those!"

But at the NHRA Museum in Pomona, CA you can see just how big those racers' balls needed to be when they got behind the wheel of the early race cars and hot rods.

Roll cage...what's that? Safety harness...er, not sure what you're talking about. These are the guys who jumped all over the Ford Model T and transformed it from a car for the masses into a hot rod for the races.

See just how far the hot rods and dragsters have come since those early days by talking a tour of the NHRA Museum.

When Wheelies Go Bad

When Wheelies Go Bad
Thanks to josephaya for sharing how NOT to do a wheelie with us.

We think this guy might be feeling a little pain in the morning (if he's conscious) but, then again, if you're stupid enough to:
a) do a wheelie on a dirt bike on the road
b) wear shorts and a t-shirt
c) not wear a helmet
you got what you had coming and we're really not feeling any sympathy for you.

Want to try that again? Yeah, we didn't think so.

These guys, on the other hand, have both skill and the brains to wear protective gear!

Chrysler Group's Electric Future

Chrysler Group's Electric Future
Streetfire.net's own ksingh brings us 3 uploads about the future of Chrysler Group's, well, future.

Electric Drive is the way of the future for Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep, with 2 hybrid vehicles - a Jeep Wrangler and a Chrysler Town & Country - in the lineup that use an electric motor, backed up by a small combustion engine and a generator. A definite step-up (in green terms) from just a gas guzzling motor.

But there's also a completely electric 2-door Dodge that produces the equivalent of 270 horsepower and around 450 lb-ft of torque, plus will do a 0-60 of under 5 seconds! It'll also go about 150miles on a single charge, which means there's really no excuse not to try electric power!

How Not To Impress Women

How Not To Impress Women
CarMovies.de brings us something amusing from the world of advertising.

If guys still think that women are impressed by 'cool' driving (which normally translates into driving too fast and/or recklessly, with less talent than you think you have), think again.

As the 'stud' in this ad shows, while he might be adept with an e-brake, he's still lacking a few brain cells...and a taste gene, if those fluffy dice are anything to go by.

F1 Driver in a Civic Type-R = FAST!

F1 Driver in a Civic Type-R = FAST!
VODCars brings us a mix of some excellent professional driving and some completely moronic amateur stuff.

First off, former F1 racer Riccardo Patrese, having done some laps in a Honda F1 car at the Jerez circuit, gets the chance to take his wife out for a lap in the Civic Type-R. Bit of a step-down in the horsepower / handling department, but ah well...

Apparently, high-speed cornering and general aggressiveness on the track are not traits that Mrs Patrese particularly cares for and she's quick to let us know in high-pitched Italian. Riccardo barely acknowledges her protestations except to go a bit faster.

You also get to witness stupidity at its best. If you've ever wondered how to bring a freeway to a complete standstill, here's your answer. Try not to be an idiot and do this yourself. It's not big and it's not clever.

UNIMOG
SpeedEngineBlock brings us something tough and rugged in the form of Mercedes' UNIMOG.

This truck has Hummers cowering in defeat and all those other pansy SUVs running for the nearest mall. This truck is a serious off-road machine and it will basically just drive straight over the competition if it feels like it.

The UNIMOG can haul 26,000 lbs - the equivalent of 16 Smart cars - and definitely has a place on the 101 Cars You Must Drive list.

This Escalade might not have any off-roadability, but it sure has some good acceleration!

599 Mansory Stallone

599 Mansory Stallone
Just another average day of car spotting in London as captured by zachmoore

Admittedly we are in Knightsbridge, behind the Harrod's department store, but even so this collection of cars is bit ridiculous.

Heading the lineup is the ridiculously good looking 599 Mansory Stallone that sounds and look far insanely mean.

And, just to keep our attention, there's a run-of-the-mill black 599 behind it and a Bugatti Veyron bringing up the rear, plus two LP640 roadsters just parked at the side of this narrow, busy street. All pretty crazy.

Growling Lambo

Growling Lambo
L4MB0R6H1N1 lives up to his name and brings us some extremely pleasing entertainment in the form of the LP560-4.

If you've ever wondered where those clever sound effects people get really effective, big cat roars from, look no further. It's not an actual animal making that noise, that would be far too obvious. It is, in fact, a car!

This Lambo growls more menacingly than a lion demanding to be fed, but unlike that animal we would like to have the Lambo as a pet.

For some Lambo nostalgia see what people thought of the Countach back in 1985

Fergie And Her Camaro

Fergie And Her Camaro
TheDarkKnight brings us some musical entertainment with a pseudo auto theme.

Big companies like GM always love to get celebs to schill for their products, hence this performance by Fergie with a little help from the new Chevy Camaro.

Although it's for the "Fashion Rocks" event we're not so sure about her singing (even the aging Blondie does a better job) but just enjoy the car while the chick in the tight pants walks around on its roof.

We're all for pranks and stunts and the like, but this is just out of order. Hopefully the bike hasn't left any dents or tire treads on the roof of this poorly parked Maserati (and at least they didn't key the car!) but still. Respect, man!

Central Europe Rally

Central Europe Rally
hipstudio brings us some rally action from Hungary and while it might not look too strenuous for the vehicles involved, we have a feeling this is just one of the 'easier' stages!

Evidently the Central Europe Rally has several classes and while we admire the guys driving the 4 x 4s and those maniacs on dirt bikes, we love the look of the big trucks bouncing through the mud! They look like they're ready to stop and do a garbage collection or deliver something from Ikea. Just twice as fast as the guys who do either of those jobs would ever manage it!

To see just how capable those trucks really are, watch some in action on the Paris-Dakar

Racing the Hungaroring

Racing the Hungaroring
Racing action courtesy of Mphotohu who ventured out to a damp Hungaroring to get some great track and in-car footage of Ms. Edina Bus doing some fierce laps!

Now we know you're probably more used to seeing Hamilton and Massa duking it out around this hard-to-pass course but hey, the F1 circus is only in town for 1 week every year, so for the other 51, you get these tough little Yaris lookalikes jostling for position and, if you're lucky, doing the odd spin!

This woman has evidently never been anywhere near a racetrack. The cop says she was speeding, has a broken taillight and busted windshield. All we know is, in future she might want to cooperate so she doesn't get tasered!

2008 CHP 11-99 Rally

2008 CHP 11-99 Rally
speedandmotion can always be counted on to be at SoCal's best car gatherings and this one is no different.

If you own a fast and exotic car in Southern California, and are known to edge above the speed limit every once in a while, chances are you are a fully paid-up member of the CHP 11-99 foundation. This charitable organization, benefiting California Highway Patrol family members, also benefits those that contribute to the non-profit with less-harsh fines meted out at the roadside.

And, for good measure, there's an annual rally complete with CHP escorts (presumably with their radars turned off).

What sort of member cars showed up? Figure on pretty much every Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche you can think of, and add a Maserati MC12 for good measure!

24-year old Steve Jones recently won the QUIT Targa West Competition Modern class, beating the likes of a 911 GT2 and a Lamborghini Superleggera into 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

We're not sure what's more impressive: the fact that such a young'un beat out some very serious, and more experienced, competition or that the Nissan GT-R gave such a resounding beating to the rest of the field. Either way, good on ya, mate!

Fat Bloke + Slim Lambo = Bad Situation

Fat Bloke + Slim Lambo = Bad Situation
We want to laugh at this video from barnesy but it's just not that funny.

Imagine yourself rolling up to a cool club. There's a line outside full of hot girls not-so-patiently waiting to get in. They see your black Lambo Murci and hope you might be their Golden Ticket to get inside. Then the car door opens...and nothing happens.

Because you're so fat, you can't even get out of the car. It takes you nearly 2 minutes to try and extricate yourself from this gleaming piece of beauty and emerge in all your slovenly glory.

There's some fancy footwork going on in this video from TheDarkKnight and we think the editing might be a bit suspect, too!

But hey, all in good fun, right? In case you're not a fan of European Soccer, Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the stars of the Premier League, playing for Manchester United, plus a member of the Portuguese national team. Oh, and seems he's pretty quick on his feet, too.

KITT has been stolen! During preparations for a promo event a cunning thief ran from the crowd, jumped into the running KITT and peeled away. No, say it ain't so!

Alas, we've been in this biz too long to ever believe that such a thing happened without being finely orchestrated by some scheming PR person but we must say they did a good job of making it look real, as this second angle / video shows, complete with frantic calls for help.

Maybe if they'd done it in LA, we would have been more believing. But Canada? Nah, they're far too nice up there.

2009 Nissan GT-R review Part 1: Delivery

The StreetFire Long Term Test Nissan GT-R
Part 1, Taking Delivery, 0-650 miles

2009 Nissan GT-R

15 years. That’s how long I’ve waited to own Godzilla, and here I find myself on a plane flying into tropical storm Fay pounding Atlanta the day I take delivery. Even though my wife and I had recently moved with StreetFire from Atlanta to Los Angeles, we chose Nalley Nissan in Atlanta, Georgia to order our car back in February. I had been smitten with romantic images of taking our new arrival around Road Atlanta shortly after delivery, perhaps even a visit to the Tail of the Dragon. Now I realize we are going to have to arrange transport back West as I don’t want to break the car in on the never ending monotony that is I40.

Over the past month I have become an avid reader of anything GT-R, and have spent a fair amount of time posting on NAGTROC and the GT-R Register. I can’t have my morning coffee until I’ve hit the GT-R Blog Sites too! (CBA-R35, 2009 GT-R and GT-R Blog) StreetFire organized a visit to Universal Nissan in Universal City to witness delivery of the first GT-R in the United States, and I even got a chance to speak with Steve Millen about his thoughts on the GT-R. But when I walked into the dealership and saw my car for the first time. Well, I felt like I was 16 again.

2009 Nissan GTR Keys

My First sight of the GT-R
Nissan is proud of their flagship and it shows with the white glove treatment I received from Nalley. The paperwork was quick and painless and I quickly found myself in the driver’s seat. My GT-R sat roped off on the showroom floor for over a week while I was preparing for my trip. My salesman, Todd deserves a medal for fighting off hordes of admirers. John Clark, the General Manager, had insured that my car was delivered in perfect condition with only 34 delivery miles on the odometer. (Delivery Checklist from NAGTROC).

I can see why. The GT-R is a car you have to see in person to appreciate. It’s a very three dimensional vehicle, with a lot of depth and detail in the design. Photography tends to flatten the car and remove much of the drama the sculpted lines create. Perhaps I’ll get our friends from Car Pix to elaborate some time as to why some cars look so much better in person than on film.

Nalley Nissan had sent their head mechanic to GT-R service training, to prepare him for both delivery and service. This is the only car I’m aware of that the manufacturer insists your first ride be with a trained technician for proper orientation. I think headquarters is concerned that someone might mistakingly buy a GT-R thinking it will behave like a Maxima, only to be surprised that the GR-6 Sequential 6 speed makes clunking noises as you roll to a stop, or that 6 pot Brembos with racing pads tend to squeak a little.

Andy Robinson, Nalley’s master technician, was very knowledgeable about the vehicle, and explained how the side vents create a pressure bubble of hot air down the side of the vehicle to aid in aerodynamics. I had wondered what the hood vents were for, and he showed how they dump cool air right onto the turbos when the car is moving, and allow the turbos to vent hot air back up when stationary. A neat trick to reduce under hood engine temperatures.

These are the things that impress me the most about the GT-R, the car is so thought out. A small ridge on the side view mirror creates an air vortex that is channeled by a crease in the C-Pillar right into the rear spoiler. In later weeks I would learn that the downside of this great aero, is that the GT-R is a dirt magnet like no other vehicle. A price I’m delighted to pay for a 0.27 Coefficient of Drag!

Wind Tunnel Testing
That first time you push the GT-R’s starter button, is more akin to hitting an adrenaline dump on an IV. You don’t know what to expect, and there is a slight delay as the computer runs through the pre flight checklist before engaging the motor…. just enough delay to build anticipation, I wonder if some Japanese Zen master measured how soon is too soon and how long is too long? Andy gives me a brief on the multi function display, but I find myself paying more attention to the sounds of the motor and transmission whirring up in preparation of the first drive.

Previously I have owned a handful of V8s (L81, L98 and LS1) and most recently a BMW M3, (my M3 is now For Sale BTW) each with a distinct aural sound. The GT-R is a distinctly mechanical symphony with a bit of jet turbine mixed in. It reminds me somewhat of the straight cut gears you hear in a racing transmission, which it may be, the GR-6 sequential manual is worth paying attention to, it’s simply brilliant. As I eased away from the dealership, I was stunned by how smoothly we accelerated from a stop and how transparently the gear changes are. My only other exposure to “manumatics” had been the E46 BMW SMG system which feels more like a high school driver’s-ed simulator.

Transmission, Suspension and VDC
Left in Automatic mode the GT-R quickly finds 6th gear for maximum economy. Andy explains that the normal setting for the transmission is to maximize economy. The Race setting keeps the car a downshift away from maximum acceleration. It’s not like the other manumatics where you have multiple settings for shift speed, the GT-R is smarter than that. It looks at the RPM and % throttle application to understand how the driver is driving, and changes shift firmness accordingly.

The GT-R is not the first car with this sort of dual clutch sequential transmission, but when combined with this chassis and driveline, I think it’s found it’s ultimate expression. I never thought I would give up the clutch pedal, but how can you not love this gear box?

Magic Happens Here
Tropical storm Fay gave me exactly 15 minutes of dry weather to familiarize myself with the GT-R, and then all hell broke loose. The word for storm in Japanese is “Arashi” but it could just as easily be “GT-R,” because the twin vortexes made by the turbos apply power to all 4 tires with near limitless traction regardless of how violent the weather is. The storm simply didn’t matter. The winds glided undisturbed past the body work and the water parted like the red sea before the AWD.

I left Nalley and proceeded to put 500 miles on the GT-R in some of the worst weather this Florida boy has seen in a long time, and the GT-R consistently performed. I found myself doing a sanity check and pulled into a parking deck at Atlantic Station to look at the stock Bridgestones. I simply couldn’t believe that this tread pattern with the mocking suggestion of water channels could provide this sort of traction in wet weather.

GT-R Bridgestone Tires
I horsed the GT-R around some of my favorite Southern switch backs and never once did it lose composure. I hate to say it, but the GT-R is faster and more confidence inspiring in the wet, than my beloved E46 M3 is in the dry. If you can’t find a GT-R to drive for yourself, then drive a E46 M3 to the limit, and realize that’s what a wet weather warm up lap in a GT-R feels like.

Despite missing a proper Road Atlanta track day, I’m happy Fay gave me a little wet weather exposure. The GT-R is Los Angeles bound, and doomed to a future of dry desert mountains and eternal sunshine.

Coming soon, Part 2: How to transport a car cross country.
