Last Chance: Richard Hammond "Get Well" Thread

Last Chance to get your well wishes in! Junk is sending out our "Get Well Soon" email to Richard Hammond at the BBC tomorrow, so if you want your name included, please post now. This is your last chance.

...In case you've been living under a rock for the past week. Richard Hammond, our much loved co-presenter of Top Gear, the best TV-Show ever, had a near death accident last week while trying to set the British Land Speed Record. He crashed his rocket powered Car at nearly 300mph, and has spent the past week recovering from critical to now stable condition. Today he was air lifted to a hospital a little closer to his wife and daughters. We're all praying for a full recovery over here, and if you want to add your voice to ours, then please add your name to the thread.

[Post: Add your Well Wishes to Richard Hammond]

SuperBikes on SPEED

A few weeks ago we noticed the folks from SPEED TV were uploading some teasers to our site....free promotion for them great content for all of us. Ever since then I've kept an eye on their uploads, and here is one of the latest. As a huge sportbike fan (literaly, I weigh 235 pounds), I'm an avid fa of the show "Super Bikes!" and this latest upload is an excerpt from it. Check it out.... PS I'm really mad I missed the taping of "Super Bikes!" when it was here in Atlanta....you guys at SPEEDtv hear me? If you come through Atlanta with another Jason Britton Stunt show and don't give me a heads up I'm deleting all your vids off the system out of spite. ;-)

Jalopnik gets an update, and so do we...sort of.

In case you haven't noticed, we've been stuck mid-way through an update in our site design for oh... I don't know.... all summer I think.... But hey, at least we finally updated our logo for 2006! Anyhow, knowing how time consuming a site overhaul can be, we just wanted to congratulate the folks over at Jalopnik on their new set of wheels.....er... I mean web site.

[Jalopnik's new site]

PS we just noticed that folks running Internet Explorer with the latest patches were unable to view our banner rotator above. The problem should be fixed now, so let me know if you're still having problems.

Help me Pick em, Best of StreetFire.net

As if we're not busy enough, here is our latest project, and we could us your help. Every week we want to pick three stand out videos to highlight in a "best of" weekly digest format. I'll edit the videos together and post them back here, if it doesn't suck we may just podcast it. That said, my tastes are pretty eclectic (meaning odd), so Chris and Jeremy don't trust me to pick them by myself which is why they want me to ask you for submissions. So for this week (what's left of it), here is our working thread. Submit up to three videos you think need to be included and I'll publish the video....uhm...hopefully by Sunday.

[Tell me your favorite videos of the week!]

Transmission cut away, CVT Video

The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) has gained a lot of acceptance lately and is available on more and more models as it's performance and economy potential has been realized. Here is a cool video that was just uploaded that shows one operating in cut-away. If a picture is worth a thousand words, than there is no better explanation of how this system works than a video.

20th Anniversary TA through the cones

Not often you see a rare car like this being driven the way it was designed to. This is one of those special cars that GM occasionally makes in spite of itself, and arguably is one of the, if not the best Firebird made, the 1989 20th Anniversary Trans Am.

Due to the Stigma of heavy iron Muscle Cars, people often forget how good of a handler the Firebird really was, and this one was the best of the lot. The recipe was straight forward take an already competent handling V8 Trans Am that could pull 0.90Gs on the Skid pad and put an even lighter more powerful Turbocharged 3.8 Liter V6 motor out of the Grand National into it. The results were impressive, and when Autoweek tested this car in 1989, it pulled over 1.0 G in lateral acceleration, establishing the best result for the test they had ever recorded until it was finally bested by the Ferrari F40.

In 1993 the third generation Firebird was replaced with the 4th generation, and much of the raw handling talent of the third gen was lost to the heavier car with more options, more compliant communicative SLA front suspension, and nod to more civility. The better LT1 and eventually revolutionary LS1 overshadowed the accomplishment's of the third generation F-Cars, but anyone who has owned both will tell you, the 4th gens did lack a lot for the raw visceral handling grunt of a light 3rd gen car with the WS6 option.

StreetFire.net at NOPI! Our Official Page

Okay, that was the most fun I've ever had at a car show, and by far the most fun the StreetFire.net has ever had as a team. We owe a lot of thanks to a lot of people that helped make this possible, so here goes.

First, a big thank you goes to Brandon and Josh from Motorcars of Georgia. They loaned us a brand new Lotus Exige to place in our booth and I think I spent at least half the show oggling it. We had literally hundreds of people come by and ask about it, so if you want more info and didn't get a card, please call Brandon Saszi (888-346-3161) and he'll set up a time to meet with you.

Next Kadi and Amy deserve a huge "Thank You!" While everyone worked hard, these two just stole the show by putting a friendly face on Streetfire.net. You two were real troopers, always friendly, and always willing to take photos and hand out fliers to spread the word. Thank you again for all your hard work!

Speaking of hard work though, there is no way we could have pulled this off without help from our friends Josh, Eddie, Tony, Junk and Rios. As a matter of fact here are some photos that Junk Shot and posted yesterday.

But it wasn't all work, as a matter of fact, it didn't feel like working at all because we had so much fun, and I think that comes from us finally meeting many of you that make StreetFire.net so much fun. From TeamRPM(Their Video) to Bob and Shawn from Fidanza.(Who've uploaded a lot of videos).

We also made a lot of new friends too, like Matt from LED Dome Lights, who Kadi Interviewed...(Hope you got your voice back!), We also had a good time hanging with Evan and the gang from Exedy Clutch, and we really appreciate the T-shirts and Hats! Here is an interview that Kadi did. We also met Adam Matthews from Eibach who is also the announcer on G4TV's Formula D show. Thanks for the kind words Adam, glad to know we're mutual friends of each others works. We also really enjoyed meeting Brian Fox from Fox Marketing.

We had an especially good time with folks from Kicker. Drew, Kip and Benny. (sorry if I missed anyone). You guys really showed us all a great time and we enjoyed closing down the Outback! I think we have a few hours worth of footage shooting T-Shirts off your trailer, so it may take some time to go through it all and put together a best of clip. But here is a little bit of it. Additionally we really enjoyed meeting K Smooth and DJ Fury. You guys really know how to get a crowd going and I can't thank you enough for spreading the word for us!

And finally I want to thank everyone that took the time to come by our booth, say hi and let us know you like what we're doing. We spend so much time behind a computer that sometimes we lose site of how many people we have reached out to, so from the entire StreetFire.net team thank you, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

GT500 Video review by Carpix.net

Last month we featured a Ford GT getting thrashed by the good folks at Carpix.net. Well, they've been busy and have just released two more videos. The first is a very nostalgia rich highway run down Route 66 in the GT500... (Which I've been featuring way too much lately.).. The second? Well that one is extra special and one of my personal favorites so I'll feature that one in a second... so for now, please enjoy this great run down Route 66!

EVO tests the new Lotus Europa

Thanks to the guys at EVO magazine for uploading this video (wish it was higher quality though). Very cool car, but I think I'll still take a Lotus Exige instead .... Considering they're among the best handling best performing cars in the world, they're actually surprisingly affordable.

NOPI Update!

Sean & Adam working till 2AM on the booth.
Well folks, barring a natural disaster, act of god or last minute leash pop by the wife, StreetFire.net is going to have a booth at the 2006 Atlanta NOPI Nationals this weekend! We're running around like mad men here at the last second trying to get our booth together in time.

Please come by, say hi! Tell us what you like and don't like about the site and what we can do to make it better. We should have some goodies to give out if you're shooting video to upload to StreetFire.net so please tell us if you're uploading NOPI footage to the site next week. Assuming I'm not hung over on Sunday we'll try and get a post-event NOPI section together on the site with your video submissions, pictures, etc. That way those of you that can't make it this weekend can at least get a feel for the show.

Special note to StreetFire.net Sponsors. We've had a huge response to our new sponsor program but a lot of questions too. Be sure to ask for Adam or Sean and we'll be happy to talk to you about the program, and answer any questions you might have.

Cool Camera angle of the day

Just a little something to get the creative juices flowing for you videographers out there. This is a pretty common camera at MotoGP races, but getting this same angle on the streets can be difficult without a good bullet camera or mount. What I like about this angle is it really fits the subject and emphasizes the leaning... And its a CBR-600RR... Which I obviously have a soft spot for.

GixxerKart!...yes a GSXR-1000 powered Go-kart

I've seen this one uploaded before, but I can't find it now, and this new dup reminded me I wanted to feature it anyways.

..so I like to tell my Corvette buddies that as awesome as a Z06 is, an Ariel Atom is both cheaper and performs better... but you see now that I've set the Ariel Atom on this pedestal there isn't anything that is both cheaper and faster than it.....until now. Aussie drifting, powered by big blocks and Jack Daniels

What kind of motorsports would I like to race in?
For money? F1. (Hey I hear Ferrari has a vacancy...okay there is a small waiting list)
For fun? hands down it I'd be a drifter and I think I FINALLY found the drift car that everyone can love.

It's Australian and it's drifting, so the import guys are happy. It's got a big block V8 with a bug catcher so the domestic guys are happy. It's a Ford "Ute" so the off roaders get a little love, and finally it's sponsored by Jack Daniels so drunks everywhere can rejoice!

Spy Photo 2007 335i Sedan.

Left Lane News has it, spy shots of a really banged up...(ouch) 2007 335i sedan. Judging by the gash down the side it looks like a jealous Mercedes Engineer tried to side swipe the car ...yikes. Anyhow, BMW never made a 4-Door e46 M3, but this new car with a twin turbo inline 6 is going to be the real deal. Expect some solid mid thirteen's from this affordable family hauler.

First Mustang Shelby GT500 into the 10's

Evolution Performance beat everyone to the punch by submtting the first video of a brand new GT500 on a dyno. Now they've done it again with video proof of the first Shelby GT500 into the 10's! Backing up this run is a video of a 578RWHP dyno run and pictures of the timeslip. So what does it take to get a GT500 to dip into the 10's?
  • Metco 2.6" Pulley
  • Evolution Performance Custom Tune
  • JLT Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake
  • Stiegemeier Stage 1 Blower Port
  • Custom Off-Road X-Pipe
  • Borla Cat Back Exhaust System
  • FRPP 4.10 Gears
  • BMR Suspension
  • S&W Roll Bar
  • Aerospace Brakes
  • 4" Aluminum Driveshaft
  • Bogart Racing 17"GT Series Wheels
  • M&H Tires - 325/45R17 Drag Radials
Oh, and this Shelby achieved that run with less than 100 miles on the odometer, and only 4 weeks off the showroom floor. So expect a whole lot more to come!

Congratulations to the whole Evolution Performance team, thanks for the submission!

Australian Motorsports Legend, Peter Brock dies in wreck.

R.I.P. Peter Brock (1945 - September 8 2006)
Peter Brock, Australian motor sports legend and "king of the mountain" passed away yesterday in a car wreck while participating in the Targa West Tarmac Rally just outside of Perth. Peter's co-driver Mick Hone survived the wreck and is being treated at Swan Districts Hospital. [More detail and Memorial Page hosted on HoldenV8.com]

According to an AP newswire story, Brock will be given a state funeral in honor of his outstanding achievements and inspiring career. From all of us at StreetFire.net our hearts and prayers go out to Peter's wife Beverly and their three children.

Update: Thanks to Chris Paukert from WindingRoad.com for finding a video from Tasmanian TV that covered this tragic event event. Also here is a video of Brock from Bathurst exhibition run.

This is just a work of art, and with 900hp dyno pulls...man the Louvre has nothing on this. Take a look at the turbo work on this thing. Those pipes are massive. Dodge SRT-4 Commercial

Given how conservative car companies are with their advertising you have to admit this commercial is a bit edgy...showing a street race and all..nevermind the implication of teen sex out of wed-lock (gasp!).

I remember when the 1998 Trans Am commercials came out, GM legal had a hissy fit and wouldn't let Pontiac show two cars lining up at a traffic light for fear it would promote Street Racing. Fast forward to 2004 and GM still has it's panties in a wad and pulls the much loved Corvette C6 commercial because...get this crap.... it promotes under age driving....My lord, did someone cure cancer or something where we now have to worry about underage driving? Anyhow kudos to Dodge for making a fun, young and relatively honest commercial about the then (when it was shot) SRT-4. PS if you're a big SRT fan I would recommend you check out SRTforums.com.

Okay now this just sucks. Take a close look at the exhaust right about time stamp 00:08 and you'll see some sparks coming out of the exhaust followed by.......a mushroom cloud... Ouch.

BTW, here is a hint When you are watching the Flash version of the video, if you click "preview" under the MySpace embed code you will see our new player that includes keyboard controls. Much easier to do frame by frame viewing of a video. Tap the [SPACE] bar in rapid succession and it will advance one key frame at a time. Right click to see a complete list of keyboard commands.
