Direct Download of the Day, Ultima GTR pulls 9s and tromps a Veyron 0-100-0

Download on iTunes
This car is a BEAST! Okay as annoying as Jeremy Clarkson is you have admit the brits are making some damn fine machines of late. Let's take a quick look.

Ariel Atom
Lotus Exige S
Noble
Caparo

All have the same philosophy too. Take a light track ready chassis throw in as much power as you can and then go have a blast. One problem though. With the exception of the Caparo, all these motors are ...shall we say... simply not insane enough. What if we took a car the size and weight of a Lotus and cramed in a 500hp Chevy V8? Now we're talking, and that's what Ultima has done! This thing makes a Veyron look tame. Don't believe me? How many sub $100K cars do you know that will pull 9s at 140mph in the Qtr mile? That's Frick'n Hayabusa fast! Anyhow click for a high quality download, or watch it streamed.

PS if you had subscribed to the iTunes feed you would have already downloaded this by now since I actually posted it 4 hours ago, so go to iTunes, subscribe to the feed, and that way you don't have to wait for me to post int he blog to know what we're going to feature next. :-)

SubaruNorway Gives us a taste of a WRC Winter Wonderland

I can't tell you how often I lament not getting proper WRC coverage here in the United States. If we did it would probably surpass F1 as my favorite motorsport. But seeig it in person must be even better than seeing it for real, so a special thank you goes our to "SubaruNorway" for providing StreetFire coverage from a frozen Norway winter!

New Porsche Cayman Accesories means Wallpaper for you!

Porsche has announced new splitters and rear wing accessories for the Cayman, which I have to admit it a pretty underwhelming announcement. Had it been new aero and a limited lip diff I would be pretty happy, but oh well. At least it makes killer wallpaper. (click thumbs for larger images)

Porsche Press Release
New Aerokit makes the Porsche Cayman even sportier

Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, has begun to supply Aerokits for its Cayman und Cayman S sports cars. This new customizing equipment consists of add-on spoiler lips for the standard front-end apron panel and a new, fixed rear spoiler.

Designed by engineers at the Porsche Development Center in Weissach, the Aerokit gives the Cayman even more ‘bite’ and even sportier, more dynamic looks. The front spoiler lips emphasize the visual power of the big air inlets in the front apron. The new, fixed rear wing creates a strong visual accent even when the car is standing still. Along with the car’s appearance, its aerodynamics have also been upgraded. The Aerokit’s components, optimized in Porsche’s wind tunnel, reduce lift at the front and rear axles, making the car even more stable at high speeds. The aerodynamic components have been carefully matched and must therefore only be installed as a complete set. All the items in the Aerokit are supplied in the car’s body color and harmonize well with the Cayman’s dynamic styling.

Porsche supplies this Aerokit on all international markets. In Germany, it can be ordered via Porsche Exclusive for 3,500 Euros (excluding value-added tax) for installation on a new car. For later customization, it will be available starting in March 2007 from Porsche Tequipment for 2,950 Euros excluding VAT, installation and spraying.

Oh sweet Eleanor

Wow, simply wow. I'm pretty pleased how much momentum or new Classifieds section has picked up, but today...did I ever have a treat. This morning a gentleman from Denmark posted this amazing Mustang for sale, the bad news is the car is in Denmark, the good news is, I can think of few things I would love doing more than tearing up northern Europe in this beast. Anyhow it seams to be making the rounds pretty quickly because in the few short hours it's been posted it has already netted close to 5,000 views...wow!

Want to be a featured Artist? Sick of Being Broke?

StreetFire.net is here for one purpose, to support the automotive videographer. We do that by three methods.

1.) Highest Quality Video Streaming of any video-site. (StreetFire vs. youTube compared)
2.) Largest Automotive Video community on the Net (Stats)
3.) And new for 2007, Featured Artist downloads on iTunes

So, I'm happy to announce that we're ramping up our featured artist section to now include high-quality direct downloads of select featured artist videos. So how does this help videographers? Every day we're going to dig through submissions, find our favorites and add it to the Best of StreetFire.net iTunes podcast. That's an instant 10,000 views for your video on iTunes, and we expect that to grow as we promote the service. Do you sell DVDs? Shoot a great trailer, drop me a line, if I like it, I'll feature it and 10,000 people will get to see it too, and that's on top of the views you get here on StreetFire normally (which typically can be 100,000+ for great content).

So Shoot your video, give it a good edit, upload your video to StreetFire.net and drop me a line. If I like it, I'll feature it.

Roadfly.com tests the new Mini Cooper

RoadFly.com has just published two new tests starting with the new Mini Cooper.... I think.... darn thing looks so much like the old Mini Cooper that I struggle to tell them apart. Maybe if I got out more I could tell, you see while the other car web sites get to go out and have some fun, the StreetFire crew is busy managing video servers, encoding ques and web streamers.... sigh.... must be nice :-)

Oh and as a side note they also just got some seat time in a new Jaguar XKR to flog around Willow Springs. Okay now I just want to cry.... must get away from computer... must get back in driver's seat. If someone wants to treat me to a few runs at Road Atlanta to get me out of the house, drop me a line it would do wonders for my sanity ;-)

These guys are awesome. I swear, every time I see a video from the UAE I'm impressed by how much we have in common with those guys as fellow car nuts. It just goes to show that it doesn't matter where you live people who are passionate about cars are the same at the core.

In other news, Dubai has just debuted their 2009 F1 racetrack, so now suddenly I have a reason beyond sand dune off-roading to go visit. :-)

Upside down and on fire, NASCAR shows Top Gear how it's done

Top Gear had a pretty lame episode last week. Normally their cross country challenges are very funny with brilliant comments, funny satire and good nature jabs. Last week's TG episode was just one long America-bashing joke, no cool cars, no tests, no exotics, just one long tired southern joke. I mean seriously guys, we give you such great material and all you can come back with is fat Stig and we're going to get murdered?

I can only think this dearth of good content was due to Richard's tragic wreck that nearly took his life and the pressures that placed on the shooting schedule. The Episode would have felt lest scripted and smarter had it been cut down to 20 minutes.

At any rate, at one point they sort of bag on NASCAR, which is fine were it not for last night's spectacular finish of the Daytona 500. Even the TG team has got to admit that finishing 18th in a race upside down and on fire is the height of cool. I can think of no better Jack Daniels ad myself than just showing this car sliding across the finish line on it's hood......on fire.... Anyhow....

Another way is to check us out on QuantCast.com as I've put one of their tags on our site as well. We'll have to see if they both report the same numbers.

Podcast #010: BMW takes an F1 car out in the Snow.

Ever wondered what it would be like to off-road an F1 car? How about doing doughnuts on a frozen lake? A week and a half ago, BMW was at the "White Turf" horse race in San Moritz Switzerland and decided to have some fun.

BMW driver Nick Heidfeld took the car out with minimal modifications, thanks to a specially prepared set of Bridgestone Potenzas. Here is an excerpt from the Bridgestone press Release.

Bridgestone Produces Limited Edition F1 Snow Tyre for St. Moritz White Turf Demonstration Run

Bridgestone Motorsport has produced a special Limited Edition F1 Potenza Snow Tyre at the request of the BMW Sauber F1 Team which will this Sunday [4 February] be conducting a demonstration run of their F1.06 car at the prestigious White Turf horse racing event at St.Moritz, Switzerland.

The BMW Sauber F1 Team is running the car at the request of team sponsor Credit Suisse, who are main sponsors and partners of the event which is this year celebrating 100 years of international horse racing at St.Moritz.

Due to the extreme conditions in which the BMW Sauber F1.06 will run, the special F1 snow tyres, produced by Bridgestone Motorsport’s Technical Centre in Tokyo, feature 420 studs on each of the front tyres and 588 studs on each of the rear tyres. It took two Bridgestone technicians over 16 hours to manually insert all 2,016 studs into the double layer of tread compound on one set of tyres alone. Similarly, the horses racing on the frozen lake at St. Moritz will also have four studs and a rubber plate attached to each of their front and rear shoes.

Made from tungsten and embedded in aluminium casings, Bridgestone’s studs have been designed to specifically provide reliable grip on ice and hard-packed snow, exactly the conditions which can be expected at the event where night time temperatures have recently been dropping to approximately
-15°Celsius.

A similar set of tyres was also recently produced for the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team for their pre-season event on the slopes of Madonna di Campiglio in Italy.

By utilising the tread design of Bridgestone’s Potenza F1 extreme weather tyres, the irregular placement of the studs in the tyre tread blocks is intended to maximise performance of each stud in the harsh conditions. In reverse to the policy of transferring technology from F1 tyre development to road car tyre development, Bridgestone has transferred its knowledge of road car winter tyre tread compounds to the F1 snow tyres, using a soft, high-grip compound which will enable the tyres to work at a much lower working temperature range to that normally experienced by an F1 tyre on a race circuit.

The Bridgestone Corporation manufactures both studded and studless road tyres for use by the general consumer. The Bridgestone Noranza studded tyre provides exceptional grip on the ice, without sacrificing comfort, handling and quietness and with its irregular placed aluminium studs was instrumental in the philosophy behind the Limited Edition Bridgestone Potenza F1 snow tyre.

From Bridgestone’s range of studless tyres, and more suited to Continental European winters, is the Blizzak LM20. After comparative tests by a leading European automotive magazine this tyre was “highly recommended” for its outstanding all-round capabilities and described as “a very well-balanced tyre: top-class on dry, very good on wet and ice, with good snow and wear performance”. The Blizzak LM20 utilises a compound with high silica content, similar to that used by the Bridgestone Potenza F1 snow tyre.

The BMW Sauber F1 Team demonstration run is scheduled to take place with German F1 star Nick Heidfeld behind the wheel at 14:00hrs on Sunday 4 February.

In summation, a lot of work for a lot of fun. Check out the Video.

Electric Sport Bikes?

(via MotorBiker.org) At first this sounds like an odd idea, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. Yes I love good ole Dinosaur burning sportbikes, but there are some intriguing benefits to this technology in a more mature form.

First, you could go for an in-hub motor freeing up tons of space for the rider to sit lower in the bike, similar to "The Alligator" which has proven a lower seating position has some huge handling gains. Second, one of the problems with electric cars has been replacing batteries, but in a bike, given access and size, not to mention typically lower mileage driven, batteries start to make more sense. Finally, the instant torque of an Electric motor would be just plain cool from the sadle of a sport bike.... talk about a wheelie machine!

Anyhow I think this puts us one step closer to the coolest sport bike ever... Kaneda's Bike from Akira

Hard Drive Video Camera fails in-car shooting tests

This is a huge disappointment for me because I really have been wanting to make the switch to hard drive recording to relieve video dumping time.

Well, one of our forum members took the plunge and got a JVC GZ-MG77 Hard Drive Video camera, and come to find out the little camera has difficulty with the shocks and bumps of in-car filming. He tried quite a few things to soften the vibrations, including a home made in-car mount but in the end had to give up. Very much a shame. In other news we're shooting with a mini-DV video 3CCD compact form factor Panasonic, and though we haven't done much in-car footage I've really enjoyed the quality of the footage, and ease of mounting due to compact size.

As always, please join our videography discussion, and let us know your thoughts.

300hp in a 1500 pound car!

Spend ten minutes around me and you'll know one of my favorite cars ever made is the Lotus Exige. Spend twenty minutes and I'll bend your ear about the Ariel Atom, but what comes after that? Somewhere between the silly minimalism of the Ariel (we don't need no sticking roof) and the silly minimalism of the Lotus (we don't need no stinking doors, oh wait we do) comes the new KTM X-Bow.

Left Lane has a whole crop of pictures of this "car"... really more like a 4-wheel motorcycle, but then that's what KTM is known for, right?

Okay folks, I WANT VIDEO OF THIS!

French Motorcycle Cops, enthusiasts to the core

Saw this article over at Bikes in the Fast Lane, but it just goes to show how cool biker culture is. Seams French Motorcycle Police are being ordered to crack down on motorcycle speeding. But being enthusiast first, they've decided to just hand out warnings instead.

Hats off to the French police for understanding their job is public protection, not revenue collection.

When you look at deaths per mile of the United States vs other countries with higher speed limits, it becomes rather obvious that the "speed kills" axiom is BS. It's my opinion that limits are set artificially low in order to insure a nice stream of speeding fine revenue for local government. Toss in speed cameras, and government greed just goes overboard.

Personally I think artificially low speed limits cause more accidents than they prevent as it makes traffic flow at uneven rates. In an ideal world, I would love to see police given more power to exercise their own judgment on what is too fast for conditions and what is not, but without the pressure of quotas and speeding tickets. I don't blame the police for the current state of the union, instead I blame public officials for pressing a crime fighting force into tax collection, and sadly I think that creates an adversarial relationship here in the states between enthusiasts and police, but hey, that's just my opinion...

okay, rant off....

The new L92 and "Torque Plate Honing" explained

L92 heads = 30-50 RWHP on LS2

The LS7 and Torque Plate Honing Explained
More Good stuff from PRI. I cannot being to convey how much great stuff was at PRI, and how much information there is to convey about what all we saw there. But here is some more great information for the GM crowd out there.

The L92
We did a walk through of the L92, and one of the things that stands out most here to me is that it's a straight bolt on to the ubiquitous LS2 found in the CTS-V, GTO, Corvette, Trailblazer, etc. more impressive though is that it's a straight forward 30-50 RWHP bolt on. Heck LG Motorsports already has a L92-equipped LS2 putting out 485 RWHP [Link: LS1Tech Forum], thats more than a stock LS7!
[Watch Video]

The LS7
The real gem in the GMPP crown is of course the LS7, but you have to wonder why it cost so much more than an LS2? Part of that is the exotic parts like the Titanium Rods and part of it is the extra process like the Torque Plate Honing, which Tom explains to us in this video. Anyhow, enjoy watching.

Motorcycles and Traffic lights, the less Glamourous side of Riding

If you ride a street bike you know what I'm talking about. The annoying fact that your average sport bikes lacks the magnetic signature to trip traffic light sensors. Now I've heard that placing a strong magnet in the lower fairing helps, but that sounds a little like snake oil to me. The folks at Motorcycle Daily think so too and have asked readers to submit heir experience on how to fix this. My only solution has been waving cars up my exhaust so they trip the sensor....or riding in packs.... hardly a solution. If you have any input, check out the article and send your feedback, I would love to see a solution to this one.

PS here are solutions from "About.com"

1. Get off your bike and push the "walk" button if it is safe.
2. Sometimes you may just have to look both ways and run the light. In some places it's OK to "proceed with caution" after 15 minutes, in some places after 2 cycles. You need to know what the law is in your area.
3. If you fail to trigger the switch, wait at least one more cycle and then proceed when it is safe.
4. Sometimes it helps to kill the engine and restart it just to get the magnetic fields going over the tripping device. Put yourself right over the detector in the pavement. Give the bike a couple of good revs.
5. Turn right and then do a "U" turn when you can.
6. Threaten legal action. Start by calling the street department and complaining. Every week re-check the light. If you get no action, send them a nice professional letter threatening them with a lawsuit.
7. As you approach the intersection, there are lines cut into the pavement where the sensor was put in. The sensor pad is octagonal or square. Put the most metal over the intersection of two sides.
8. Another trick is to put out your kickstand. If you can get the kickstand out, there is more of a metal area to detect. Don't forget to retract your kickstand when the light finally changes.
9. Rig your bike with an electro-magnet under the frame. This is wired into the brake lamp circuit and induces enough of a field to trip most lights.
10. Consider the purchase of a device that will trip the light for you. Two such products are the Green Light Trigger and the Red Light Changer.
11. A new trend is the introduction of special motorcycle boxes that show you where to stop your bike to trip the light. The front-most "box" has additional diagonal lines, with a bike icon painted in the box.
12. Roll forwards and back in an effort to trip the sensors.
13. If you are waiting for a left-turn signal light to change, you can always proceed through the intersection on green and make three successive right-hand turns. This only works with regular city blocks.
14. Some states have sensors in the lights that can detect flashing lights of police cars and ambulances, and will quickly change the light. You might try flashing your lights to see if that will trip it.
