VW: Drivers *not* Wanted

Another great vid by UnitedPictures. So the cool thing about this driverless Jetta is not that it can drive itself, it's that has learned how to autocross itself! According to the video, it's learned to run the course faster than the human counterparts.... now if only that level of AI can make it into the next version of XBox Forza 2!

R-Bike, a Shape Shifting Motorcycle

Now how is this for a cool idea? For our non-riders asking "why do this?", the angle of the front forks determines much of a motorcycle's personality. At a very high rake (like a your classic chopper) the front wheel always wants to point straight ahead, This gives you a calm, stable relaxing ride. On a hyper-maneuverable bike like a dirt bike, the forks are practically straight up and down, this gives you a twitchy fast reacting nimble machine. Sport Bikes are closer to the dirt bike side of rake, cruisers on the chopper side.... you get the idea.

Most riders I know dream of having two bikes, a long distance cruiser, and a sporty maneuverable mountain carver. The problem for most of us is that if you have a sport bike, you're typically worn out by the time you get to the good twisty roads, or if you have a cruiser, you're dragging your boards in the mountains.

So here is a very novel solution that accomplishes both goals in one package. Literally a shape-shifting motorcycle, just in time for the Transformer movie. :-)

StreetFire developer API, take all you want!

Noticed a lot of "" icons all over the site? Guess what? The StreetFire developer API is now available! This means that search results, featured videos, recent uploads, folders, heck even a single user's favorite videos all generate RSS feeds (RSS explained). What does this mean for you? Well, if you have a browser like Firefox or Safari, you can now make "live bookmarks" of your favorite StreetFire video selections. Better yet, if you know how to program, you can use our RSS feeds to build a widget that will display search results, recent videos, or even show latest comments for the latest videos. Here are some examples.

Latest uploads by Slick
Search results for the word "Camaro"
Featured Videos
Latest "Direct Download" Videos
Shinkaze's "Favorite Videos"
Shinkaze's Comments

So, what can you do with this? Well, if you run a Mitsubishi Website you can show a feed of recent WRX videos . Better yet, why not mix together feeds with WRX , Subaru , EVO , STi , and Rally ? Now if you're a real HTML ninja, you can crack open some AJAX programing and really get inventive... How about a Mash-Up of a classified web site, with StreetFire car videos to show examples of the car? How about a Google Maps mash up showing videos from various tracks? Chances are, you guys can dream up better ideas than I can.

Hard Drive Video Camera fails in-car shooting tests

This is a huge disappointment for me because I really have been wanting to make the switch to hard drive recording to relieve video dumping time.

Well, one of our forum members took the plunge and got a JVC GZ-MG77 Hard Drive Video camera, and come to find out the little camera has difficulty with the shocks and bumps of in-car filming. He tried quite a few things to soften the vibrations, including a home made in-car mount but in the end had to give up. Very much a shame. In other news we're shooting with a mini-DV video 3CCD compact form factor Panasonic, and though we haven't done much in-car footage I've really enjoyed the quality of the footage, and ease of mounting due to compact size.

As always, please join our videography discussion, and let us know your thoughts.

The new L92 and "Torque Plate Honing" explained

L92 heads = 30-50 RWHP on LS2

The LS7 and Torque Plate Honing Explained
More Good stuff from PRI. I cannot being to convey how much great stuff was at PRI, and how much information there is to convey about what all we saw there. But here is some more great information for the GM crowd out there.

The L92
We did a walk through of the L92, and one of the things that stands out most here to me is that it's a straight bolt on to the ubiquitous LS2 found in the CTS-V, GTO, Corvette, Trailblazer, etc. more impressive though is that it's a straight forward 30-50 RWHP bolt on. Heck LG Motorsports already has a L92-equipped LS2 putting out 485 RWHP [Link: LS1Tech Forum], thats more than a stock LS7!

The LS7
The real gem in the GMPP crown is of course the LS7, but you have to wonder why it cost so much more than an LS2? Part of that is the exotic parts like the Titanium Rods and part of it is the extra process like the Torque Plate Honing, which Tom explains to us in this video. Anyhow, enjoy watching.

Motorcycles and Traffic lights, the less Glamourous side of Riding

If you ride a street bike you know what I'm talking about. The annoying fact that your average sport bikes lacks the magnetic signature to trip traffic light sensors. Now I've heard that placing a strong magnet in the lower fairing helps, but that sounds a little like snake oil to me. The folks at Motorcycle Daily think so too and have asked readers to submit heir experience on how to fix this. My only solution has been waving cars up my exhaust so they trip the sensor....or riding in packs.... hardly a solution. If you have any input, check out the article and send your feedback, I would love to see a solution to this one.

PS here are solutions from "About.com"

1. Get off your bike and push the "walk" button if it is safe.
2. Sometimes you may just have to look both ways and run the light. In some places it's OK to "proceed with caution" after 15 minutes, in some places after 2 cycles. You need to know what the law is in your area.
3. If you fail to trigger the switch, wait at least one more cycle and then proceed when it is safe.
4. Sometimes it helps to kill the engine and restart it just to get the magnetic fields going over the tripping device. Put yourself right over the detector in the pavement. Give the bike a couple of good revs.
5. Turn right and then do a "U" turn when you can.
6. Threaten legal action. Start by calling the street department and complaining. Every week re-check the light. If you get no action, send them a nice professional letter threatening them with a lawsuit.
7. As you approach the intersection, there are lines cut into the pavement where the sensor was put in. The sensor pad is octagonal or square. Put the most metal over the intersection of two sides.
8. Another trick is to put out your kickstand. If you can get the kickstand out, there is more of a metal area to detect. Don't forget to retract your kickstand when the light finally changes.
9. Rig your bike with an electro-magnet under the frame. This is wired into the brake lamp circuit and induces enough of a field to trip most lights.
10. Consider the purchase of a device that will trip the light for you. Two such products are the Green Light Trigger and the Red Light Changer.
11. A new trend is the introduction of special motorcycle boxes that show you where to stop your bike to trip the light. The front-most "box" has additional diagonal lines, with a bike icon painted in the box.
12. Roll forwards and back in an effort to trip the sensors.
13. If you are waiting for a left-turn signal light to change, you can always proceed through the intersection on green and make three successive right-hand turns. This only works with regular city blocks.
14. Some states have sensors in the lights that can detect flashing lights of police cars and ambulances, and will quickly change the light. You might try flashing your lights to see if that will trip it.

Rockers in Action

Don't know why but watching rockers in action is hypnotizing to me..... sort of my Zen place. Anyhow, cool idea I hadn't thought of, if something odd is going on with your car, why not shoot a video of it and post it up?

Not a whole lot of info on this one, but a neat idea. I always love seeing alternative engine designs in action, check it out.
