The founder of the NHRA, Wally Parks, passes away

A legend has left this world, and we were blessed to have met him. Wally Parks, the driving force behind the NHRA has died at the age of 94. The NHRA has a more in depth announcement. Last spring, we had the opportunity to meet Wally, and I remember then thinking that once he started talking about cars and racing, how young and vibrant he suddenly became. This man truly loved cars and his passion transcended the generations and touched us all. It was a real pleasure to have met you Wally, burn some rubber for us on your way through the pearly gates.

Thank You!

The last couple of months have been intense here at StreetFire. We've moved the office cross-country, relocated our families, found a new StreetFire-HQ and hired half a dozen people. Things have been crazy busy and I've been worried that we've neglected some of you while making this change.

We just got present in the mail today from Laminator in the UK, and let me tell you we all feel very appreciated by such a thoughtful gift. Jeremy, Jami, Chris and I all want to say thank you for the glasses, that little gift is a like a shot of Nitrous right off the line, and reminds us why we work so hard. So again, to Laminator and all of you that helped put this together, we all really appreciate this special present.

Canada is trying to destroy your car

This sucks, looks like a rouge Canadian province is going nuts on modified cars. If I'm reading this right, all the cop has to do is say "your car looks modified for speed" and that gives them the right to seize and crush your car. Complete rubish. Everyone needs to dig this post on Digg and spread the word.

StreetFire is hiring!

Yes, the rumors are true! StreetFire is growing faster than we can keep up with and we're in desperate need of programmers, designers, DBAs, heck, even a part time CFO.

#1 Requirement: You have to be a car nut, otherwise we don't want you.

#2 Requirement: Gotta work in Santa Monica California in view of the beach (hard life huh?).

#3 Requirement: You have to be a rock star in your field. These are ground floor job openings, with stock options and practically guaranteed seniority, so we're looking for the best.

What's on the horizon? Well, if you've followed the forum, we have lots of great ideas, and over the last few months, we've asked you what you want to see improved. Now it's time to stop asking and start doing, and we're growing the team to do it. Take a look at the job listings, if you don't see something that fits you, then PLEASE pass it along to other car nuts. We want to keep it in the family, so to speak, and want folks working with us that are going to get excited when we go to shows like NOPI, SEMA and PRI.

Our Hearts and Prayers to Kayla

The dark side of our hobby is that when an accident happens it touches us all. This one was particularly brutal as it nearly took the life of a beautiful young girl. She's in the hospital right now fighting for her life. She's suffered massive trauma, and the family is reaching out for people to offer their support through prayer.

StreetFire developer API, take all you want!

Noticed a lot of "" icons all over the site? Guess what? The StreetFire developer API is now available! This means that search results, featured videos, recent uploads, folders, heck even a single user's favorite videos all generate RSS feeds (RSS explained). What does this mean for you? Well, if you have a browser like Firefox or Safari, you can now make "live bookmarks" of your favorite StreetFire video selections. Better yet, if you know how to program, you can use our RSS feeds to build a widget that will display search results, recent videos, or even show latest comments for the latest videos. Here are some examples.

Latest uploads by Slick
Search results for the word "Camaro"
Featured Videos
Latest "Direct Download" Videos
Shinkaze's "Favorite Videos"
Shinkaze's Comments

So, what can you do with this? Well, if you run a Mitsubishi Website you can show a feed of recent WRX videos . Better yet, why not mix together feeds with WRX , Subaru , EVO , STi , and Rally ? Now if you're a real HTML ninja, you can crack open some AJAX programing and really get inventive... How about a Mash-Up of a classified web site, with StreetFire car videos to show examples of the car? How about a Google Maps mash up showing videos from various tracks? Chances are, you guys can dream up better ideas than I can.

Robert E. Petersen Dies at age 80.

Folks like Mr. Peterson helped make the aftermarket industry what it is today, and I know I for one started my love of the sport within the pages of Hot Rod Magazine and Motor Trend. So a moment of silence for one who has helped shaped and define a sport that touches us all.

-Adam

Robert E. Petersen, Founder of Hot Rod, Motor Trend Magazines and Benefactor of the Petersen Automotive Museum Passes On at 80

Robert E. Petersen, an entrepreneur who single-handedly created the largest special-interest publishing company in America, was instrumental in the evolution of the hot-rodding culture, and who, with his wife Margie, realized his dream of establishing an educational museum to pay tribute to the automobile, died on Friday, March 23, at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. after a short but valiant battle with neuroendocrine cancer. He was 80.

"Mr. Petersen helped create and feed the American obsession with the automobile, delivering gasoline-powered dreams to the mailboxes of millions," said Dick Messer, Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. "He understood the thrill that an average person could get from seeing and reading about horsepower as an art form."

A native of Southern California, Mr. Petersen's mother passed away when he was 10, leaving him with his Danish-immigrant father, who worked as a truck and equipment mechanic. As a young man he picked up his father’s skills, learning to weld, de-coke engines, and hone his fascination with cars.

After graduating from Barstow High School in the mid-1940s, he moved to Los Angeles, working at MGM studios as a messenger boy. Following service in the Army Air Corps toward the end of Word War II, Mr. Petersen, now an independent publicist immersed in the burgeoning customized auto culture of California, was instrumental in creating the first hot-rod show at the Los Angeles Armory. To help establish the event, in January 1948 he launched Hot Rod Magazine, and hawked the magazine at local speedways for 25 cents a copy. Motor Trend, a more upscale publication for production car enthusiasts, and dozens of other titles aimed at specialty automotive segments soon followed.

Mr. Petersen spent decades as Chairman of the Board of Petersen Publishing Company, which was at one time America’s leading publisher of special-interest consumer magazines and books before its sale to private investors in August 1996. Among its other diverse successful titles are Teen, Sport, Rod & Custom, and Guns & Ammo. He also headed a wide variety of other businesses including ammunition manufacturing, real estate development and aviation services that each reflected another passion he shared.

Firmly established as an American success story, Mr. Petersen had one lasting vision: an educational museum to pay tribute to the automobile. On June 11, 1994, the lifelong dream of Robert E. Petersen was fulfilled with the opening of a 300,000-square-foot automotive museum named in his honor, made possible by his $30 million endowment.

Today the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles stands as the nation’s premiere automotive museum, serving thousands of visitors each year. Its mission remains to educate and excite generations of auto enthusiasts with the fascinating stories, vehicles and people that have influenced the American love affair with the automobile - a mission that has been a resounding success thanks to the generosity of its main benefactor.

In addition to his noted auto collection, Mr. Petersen also developed a keen interest in sport shooting. He served as Shooting Sports Commissioner for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he was responsible for building that venue from an old dairy farm within six months.

Mr. Petersen served as president and chairman of the board of the Boys' and Girls' Club of Hollywood, and was a member of the National Board of Directors for the Boys’ and Girls' Club of America. He was active in support of numerous children’s charities and also served as a member for the Los Angeles City Library Commission.

Both he and his wife have been major contributors to the Music Center of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Thalians social society, which raises money for the Mental Health Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His ongoing contributions to the community earned him numerous special citations from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and Los Angeles City Council.

Mr. Petersen was to be honored with both the ‘Automotive Icon’ and ‘Visionary’ awards at the Petersen museum’s annual gala on May 10. The ceremony will now be held as a tribute to Mr. Petersen and his contributions to the institution and community.

"What made him so special was that he gave every ounce of his energy and abilities to his dreams. He was a quiet man who truly became an American icon," the Petersen museum’s Messer said. "He made his living doing things he loved and he found success at every turn. The way he lived his life, always looking for ways to give back in return for the success he enjoyed, made you proud to count him as a friend. The museum is now his legacy."

He is survived by his wife, Margie. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Petersen Automotive Museum or the charity of the person’s choice in his honor. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, March 29, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.

How to give back to StreetFire

First I want to say thank you for your emails, messages and kind words of encouragement. We do it because we love it, and more importantly we believe that a video sharing service specific for our hobby can work.

I strongly believe we should do what we can to support our own hobby, and apparently so do you! I am constantly asked on the forums, by phone, email, in person or even comments in the video, what can you do to help? From donations to working for free, I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support and am very flattered by your generosity.

That said, short of becoming a sponsor or helping to get companies to become sponsors, there are three easy things that anyone can do that has a huge positive impact on StreetFire.

1.) Fill StreetFire with content. If you have video, upload it to the site. If you see a cool YouTube video or Google Video, then stick that into the system too with embed code. Then link everyone to the StreetFire page. For Example this video was embeded onto StreetFire from Google and got 269,000 views in total. But of those 270K views, 100,000 came from StreetFire. That's just on one video!

2.) Encourage other people to fill StreetFire with content.
If you see or talk to someone posting content to other services encourage them to upload to us, or at the very least place their embed code into our system too. Why support sites that don't support us car guys? If you see a blog site using YouTube, ask them why not use StreetFire instead? heck we have higher quality than them and give their videos better traffic. [example] Conversely if you see a site that does use StreetFire over other services, tell them you appreciate them supporting us. Let us know, and we will start featuring them. [example]

3.) Spread the word on other sites that we are video sharing for the car community by the car community
. Why support sites that don't support us car guys? By people uploading videos and watching videos on StreetFire, we attract the attention of sponsors like Eibach, Edelbrock, Fidanza and others. The car community has the ability to lift up it's own, but only if the word is spread.

At the end of the day, it boils down to this, we are very grateful to all of you that have expressed a desire to give back to our community, the best way to do that is to give back. Encourage other people and other sites to use our service, and we will encourage our users to visit sites and video teams that use us as well.

Good Luck RandyJ!

We owe the success of our site to stand out members who have done more than their part to help keep our site a good community. One of those members is RandyJ who took on the daunting task of helping us bring the video comment section under control and with his help we have made huge improvements to the our community.

RandyJ is having to take a break though to pursue a new career with the Navy. Everyone at StreetFire wishes you luck my friend, and hope that when your schedule clears you'll be able to make it back here!

VentureBeat features StreetFire Analytic data

Anyone who owns a web site always wonders what their traffic looks like and for years we've been content with our own internal reporting, but recently some outside companies have made some inaccurate claims of our traffic levels which prompted a bit of an odyssey for me as I tried to get everything straight.

Anyhow, head over to Venture Beat to read the full story!

Our Stats are your Stats

UPDATE 2/16: I had to reset the code so reports are now starting on Friday at 1:00 PM EST, sorry!

Hey folks, we were approached by a couple of analytics companies looking to refine their reporting and I realized it might be cool to let you all know how we're doing. So I added SiteMeter to all our pages this morning as a quick and easy way to check out how we're doing for those of you that are curious. Another way is to check us out on QuantCast.com as I've put one of their tags on our site as well. We'll have to see if they both report the same numbers.

It looks like Site Meter needs a few more days before it has any meaningful data, so here are some stats straight from our Server Logs.

3 Million Unique Visitors in January*
45,840,994 January Page views
25,622,490 Videos Streamed In-Page
16,631,157 Videos Streamed Embed Off-Site
42,253,647 Total Videos Streamed for January
5,352 January Video System NEW Registrations
75,237 January Video System TOTAL Registrations
917 January Forum System User Registrations

As a side note, our forum system is reporting 0 registered users as our total, so I hope I didn't screw somethig up when I redid the site template.

*A couple of our reports shwo a higher number than this, but this is the most conservative measurement.

New Year New Site Design!

So the old style has been around forever... I think I originally mocked up the last version in 2004 with a minor revision in 2005. But the times they are a changing and we are long overdue for a site update, so welcome to the new design! There are a few more tweeks I would like to make here and there, but all in all I hope you like it.

The New Style is going into affect for the blog, forum, classifieds and of course the oh so popular video section. For those of you running 800x600 resolution, I would recommend staying with the 2005 Layout in the forum for easier reading. you will find a lay-out toggle underneath your user name and log in information on the top right hand side.

New Feature: Video Classifieds!

Update to the Classified service, We've added a video field for your embed code so you can now add a video to your classified listing! The process is straight forward.

Step 1: Upload Your Video
Upload your Video to a video hosting Provider that gives you Embed code (you know, like us). To upload your video to StreetFire.net click here.

Step 2: Get Your Share Code
Once your video has been transcoded into Flash-Format (which may take up to an hour), the system will send you an email letting you know your video is ready. Note: At StreetFire we try to encode all uploads into both Windows Media and Flash, so two versions are available. However it's the Flash version that has the Embed Code you need to do this. when the System tells you your video is ready it may only be the Windows Version, in which case, give it some time and when the Flash version is ready you will see "Embed Code" appear as a Share Option.

Step 3: Post your Video Classified
Go to the Classified system and post your listing. there is an optional field there labeled "Video" where you can paste in your Embed code. (To copy your Embed Code, Select the Embed Text and hit Ctrl+c , to Paste, select where you want it and press Ctrl+v). Videos are not required for posting a classified listing, and listing for individuals is free. If you are a company and want to post a listing in the New Parts category it's very affordable.

Speaking of which Welcome UrHookUp.com posting a trick HID Set up for sale in the New Parts Section.

So anyhow, thats the long and short of it here is a Sample Ad showing how the video is displayed in your Ad. FWIW that video is from our podcast a few months ago.

PerformanceVinyl.net becomes our first Classified Vendor

Well the Classifieds are going well and we just had our first Vendor Post! We have it split between free listing of used parts, and pay listing for new parts by vendors. We thought might be the best way to provide services to both members and vendors, and I feel our users will appreciate those vendors that support StreetFire by providing listings like this. PerformanceVinyl.net has gone one step further to support our membership by offering free shipping to anyone that mentions their ad placement here on StreetFire. Thanks Guys!

New Feature! StreetFire Classifieds, and redesign 2007 sneak peak.

[Go To Classifieds]
It started when we noticed people shooting video classifieds of their cars and parts for sale, and we thought "why not give you a place to list your parts for sale here?"...well after a lot of hard work, I'm proud to announce our new Classifieds Section is open! You'll notice it looks a bit different from the StreetFire you see today, that's because you're seeing a sneak peak of the soon to be release 2007 redesign that will be shown on all our pages, video section, forum, blog, etc.

So, to answer some questions:

How much does it cost to list?
Free for used parts and cars sold by individuals. Dealers and resellers can run a 6 month listing for $20.

What is my User Name and Password?
It is the same as your FORUM User Name and Password. For now the Video system is still running a different user database..... I know I know It's annoying for us too, but maybe if enough dealerships sign up in the classifieds we can hire some help :-)

I Hate/Love the New Design, how do I tell you guys?
I've started a new forum post to track ongoing refinement of the new design. PS It would already have been released had Microsoft been a little more consistent on their IE6 to IE7 CSS and JavaScript implementation. [Comment Here]

I need some help with the Classifieds, where do I go?
Post your questions about the Classifieds in our Tech Support Section. I've also started a thread for just the initial wave of questions I know will crop up. [Questions Here]

So I love StreetFire, how can I help you guys?
We really do need your help! Let us know what you think of he Classifieds, if you have friends listing parts on eBay, ask them to list here too. The more feedback and activity we have on this the more successful it will be.
