McCurdy on CAFE

McCurdy on CAFE

Autoline.

In this clip Dave McCurdy, President and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers diplomatically explains how CAFÉ will affect the auto industry since the Bush Administration (NHTSA) upped the timetable to meet those standards: 34.1 or 34.2 (per McCurdy) miles per gallon by 2015--five years earlier than previously announced and set to commence in 2011. The Alliance, the auto industry’s leading trade association, represents nine manufacturers including BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Toyota and Volkswagen.

This clip is information rich and if you are a Porsche fan you’ll be interested in the NHTSA rule addressing 'attribute based standard' which means each auto manufacturer will put their vehicles in classes or categories according to certain attributes like size. An automaker's ‘fuel economy standard’ is determined by the cataloguing of the vehicles it sells with attribute distinctions. For example: Automakers selling some inventory with large footprints (the surface area between the vehicle’s wheels) are to meet lower CAFE standards than automakers selling vehicles with mostly small footprints (yikes Porsche).

McCurdy wasn't taken by surprise by the upped timetable but acknowledges auto manufacturers WILL be stressed which is most likely a key place in the clip that McCurdy was bent to the diplomatic…LOL! McCurdy also addresses California's CO2 regulations. Check out the video for more interesting CAFE comments.
