The iconic 427 Shelby Cobra

AC CobraBrought to you by: Mugz.

Building "the" fastest sports car was a dream of Caroll Shelby. The reality of his dream produced one of the most coveted cars ever: The 427 AC Cobra.

The history of Shelby and AC, a British Sports car maker, joining together to produce the Cobra is not breaking news. AC shipped engineless cars with an aluminum body on a tubular frame to Shelby in the US and Ford supplied 289 V-8 engines. After giving the 289 a stronger chassis to withstand the amount of torque supplied by Ford's V-8 and putting the car through at least 100 tests, the Cobra, a name that came to Shelby in his sleep, became reality.

Modifications were made to the 289 in 1965 and the 427 became another Shelby reality. With more changes to the 289, the 427 (485 bhp engine) is a monster of a roadster: macho and powerful with upgrades to the transmission, suspension and chassis. The Cobra achieves 0-60 in approximately 4.2 seconds and has an estimated top speed of around 163 mph.

With only a small number of 427's produced, the bidding can be high for enthusiasts/collectors. But the adventure of researching, finding, and buying a 427 sounds like a lot of fun. Make sure you check the chassis number if you can find it and then check it out on the Shelby Web Site.
